Dolph Stanley Is a bronze bas relief. This was a commission that was extremely hard to make. There was only one very bad small picture to work from. I had to take the clay around to his former players to have them look at it to get some idea if I was close to a likeness. It is a puzzle to understand what a "little different kind of nose meant" - ta da ta da. It is like shooting in a shooting gallery blind folded with someone behind you saying "2 o'clock, 9 o'clock," etc. Eventually I hit on the likeness of the coach who died 20 years ago who they played for 40 years ago.
Bas reliefs are extremely hard to sculpt because they are basically a lie that you are trying to make look believable. It is an image that is squashed to a pancake. The nose is especially hard to foreshorten in a straight on view.
The final piece is installed at Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin.
