The Amazonian
The Amazonian is a bas relief sculpture made using a technique I developed where I carve loose green sand. It is a type of sand that packs like a snow ball and does not get hard. There is no wood pattern used in my process as is the usual way of making a mold in this type of sand. It makes it extremely difficult to do because the sand wants fall into the mold cavity. In the beginning I would get sections that did not cast properly and there were places that the metal did not flow to, leaving holes. Well I solved that problem but when I looked at them from the eye of an artist, rather than the eye of a founder, the perfect ones lacked the vivacity and life of the ones that were miss cast. So the next thing was to learn how to control the size and placement of the holes. Now when I do this type of work I deliberately plan where to place cold shut holes to add to the visual interest.
The Japanese have a term for this, meaning to see beauty in imperfection. It is called Wabi-Sabi.
The size is about 14" x 16" and stands away from the wall about 4"
