Headless Female Torso by Richard Arfsten
Headless Female Torso - sculpture. This was the demonstration piece I modeled that was judged to allow me to enter the Johnston International Sculpture competition.
The competition judges selected the top 12 emerging sculptors from around the world to sculpt a 1/2-life-size model. We all worked side by side in a circle with the model in the center. The model was turned every 15 minutes so every sculptor got to see every part of the model the same amount of time. There were 20 hours allowed for modeling (sculpting).
On the last half of the last day three judges, all professional figurative sculptors, looked at each sculptor's work and compared it to the model standing next to it. They critiqued the good and bad parts. Eventually they picked the top four.
It was a great experience to compare yourself with the best in your experience range. I placed in the top four each year I competed.
