The First Mate by Richard Arfsten
The First Mate - cast metal. This is an example of a work that is modeled and is ready to be taken to the foundry to be cast into metal.
The style is "loose," meaning the skin is not finely detailed. This gives it a more arty look than the traditional tight style. I work in many styles. This piece has been cast in cast Iron and has a black patina. The bird is not on the bust.
This same piece is the basis for other works I have done in cast paper, cloth and bronze. I saved the heads from several of these portraits and combined them into a head collage called "Previous Lives." The cloth piece is "Mel From Mel's Diner." The paper piece is called "Split Personality."
Sculpture size: 30"H x 16"W
