New Jersey by Richard Arfsten
New Jersey - fabricated sculpture. This is a sculpture made from stainless steel pipe parts from a dairy farm milking set up. In the "real world" I was a barn painting contractor in Wisconsin for 50 years. I kept my eyes open for scrap metal around the farms I painted. If the farmer wanted to haggle on the painting price I would get him to trade me some of his metal as part of the deal.
I spent a little time in New Jersey doing an apprenticeship in an art bronze casting factory. New Jersey is full of refineries and I marveled at all the pipework in them. They inspired the compositions for some of my sculpture, paintings, and photographs.
I have made several sculptures using old plumbing parts. Once I explain the story behind some of the compositions and the viewer understands, some of the people smile and say "it makes sense now."
Size: about 36"H x 18"W x 12"D
