Ancient City by Richard Arfsten
Ancient City. I work backwards from most artists in that I make a piece and afterwards decide what it is. This is one of those forms that I liked but it took me years to name it. It is made from carved sand blocks that were glued to a styrofoam board and then cast in aluminum (as most of my sculpture is). The process is fun because you have no idea what it will look like until you clean up the casting. The process is like opening presents on Christmas.
The back story of this piece is Flash Gordon and I were flying over this land on another planet and saw this ruin in the desert. It is a 3D picture from the air.
Size: 12"H x 8"W
