Egyptian Princess
Egyptian Princess - bronze wall hanging. This piece is cast in bronze and has a polychrome finish (industrial paint).
The back story: I was a student at an art colony (Penland School of Art and Craft) 30+ years ago and I was mesmerized by a beautiful young artist in another class. She had a page boy hair style that was shiny and jet black, with almost blue highlights. She wore very thick mascara all around her eyes and had a most interesting nose. She was exotic. I do not know if she was from Egypt but she looked like she was Cleopatra's hand maiden. And it turned out she was an identical twin and they both dressed the same and used the same makeup style.
I got a lump of clay and started sculpting her face as she sat in the cafeteria. I was about 20 feet away trying not to be obvious because I thought she would be irritated. After several days of being "unobtrusive" at meal times, she came over to me and asked what it would take to get me to give her back her space. She looked at the piece and liked it and asked if I could finish in 15 minutes, if so she would sit for me.
I made several incarnations of her image, some in paper mache. This piece was cast in sand and there was flashing all around. Another happy accident that I left as part of the piece. I think the "bird" was helping me. I like defects, most of the time I feel like a big defect myself.
