Juniper Noir by Richard Arfsten
Juniper Noir - maquette. Technically this was one of the most difficult designs I have ever cast. Foundry experts have asked how I did it and do not believe me when I tell them the process. I guess the lesson is if you do not know it is virtually impossible to do you journey forth with a lot more enthusiasm. To be sure dumb luck plays a part, however.
This is precisely why you do not see much art sculpture cast using this evaporative pattern process, which is my specialty. Not many artists would take their foam design to an art foundry and be told the risk of success is 1000-to-1. On top of that you are required to pay for an attempt that if it fails you lose hours of design time because the pattern is destroyed in the process.
Theoretically this piece could be enlarged with flat sheet metal. It would be a lot of work, but some companies that specialize in making metal signage should be able to do it.
Basically I am a designer. I do weld but am not capable of enlarging most of my work. That needs to be done by a fabrication shop that has very specialized computer equipment to read the maquette to develop patterns just as a tailor would do when making a custom suit.
In essence the maquette is a 3-dimensional blueprint. That is its value. It is so much more than a sketch on a piece of paper of an idea in someone's head. You can lift it up and rotate it at an eye level appropriate to the scale envisioned. This gives an exact representation of what it would look like if you were walking around it when built. These are the same tools architects use to demonstrate a concept to the client.
Or using software such as Photoshop, the piece can be superimposed onto an image of the site to depict a view from a particular vantage point.
The price shown is for the maquette only. The rights to enlarge the piece are available, but are NOT included in the sale price of the maquette. In order to enlarge the piece, the buyer enters into a contract with me and a fabricator of their choosing, and assumes financial responsibility for all enlargement and installation costs. I would be paid an additional design fee, based on a percentage of the total cost of the enlargement (similar to the practice used by architects). Please contact me for further information regarding enlargement.
Maquette size: 13"H x 9"W
