Scarlet Filly by Richard Arfsten
Scarlet Filly - cast metal. This is a carved pattern casting created by using the evaporative pattern method.
It was carved with a hot wire tool. The difficulty with that is you only get one chance to make a positive stroke. If you touch it again softly the surface gets all messed up. There is a relationship between the speed of the stroke and how the foam burns away. It was one of my very early attempts to learn this casting method.
The carving is very difficult to do. I liked the surface of the big chunk removal but ultimately I did not have the patience to do many of these. There is almost no chance to enlarge this type of a design so I moved on to a style that I would enable me to enlarge the design and fabricate it with sheet metal.
This is a one-sided piece. The back side is hollowed out as one of my experiments to control shrink.
The sculpture will come with a thick stone base that has rough cut sides.
Sculpture size: 10"H x 12"W x 4"D
