Alliance by Richard Arfsten
Alliance - maquette. This is a design that might be a good choice for a company that does investigative work.
The way your metal fabricator would enlarge this design is to digitally scan the form first to get the patterns like a tailor for your suit. There are five 6-sided boxes, including the base, to this piece. They are all single plane forms. That means each side of the box starts as flat sheet of metal.
It is then rolled in a bending machine that puts a curve in the metal. The six sides of the box are welded together into one unit. After the boxes are all made then the boxes are welded to each other. I usually cut a small sample out of poster board using a scissors and Scotch tape the corners together to get the design concept. Then I make the bigger version out of whatever metal I want. There are no compound curves. That means there are no dish shaped curves. This makes them relatively simple to build.
The advantages of you having your fabricator build it are savings on transportation costs and import duties (if applicable), and you make all the other financial decisions, eliminate gallery fees and my fee for supervision. I get paid a design fee and a separate fee is charged for Enlargement Rights.
The maquette is a three dimensional blueprint as well as a desk top piece of art. It will come with a thick polished stone base with rough cut sides.
Enlargement Rights are not included in the price of the maquette. If you would like to have the piece enlarged please contact me to talk about pricing and other details.
