Shoal of Fish by Richard Arfsten
Once upon a time in my youth I was panning for gold in the Dakotas and I was not having any luck mostly because I did not know how to do it properly. Anyway I was hungry and there were a lot of trout in this fast moving creek that I was panning in. There was a shoal of them in the shadow under a small low plank bridge right next to where I was panning. I had seen a movie about how Indians would be very still and fish would actually rub against their legs like a cat does. They would put their hand in the water being very still and the fish would rub against their hand. With a quick motion they would grab the fish and through it on the shore.
Being as clever as I could I layed down on the plank where the fish were in the shadow of the plank and put my open hand in the water. Sure enough the fish would come over to where I was and touch my hand. Piece of cake. After about 50 tries and freezing my hand until it turned into a block of ice I finally gave up. Another one of my great ideas that did not pan out. Get that, pan out! The fish were really slippery and really fast. I think they were just playing with this wanna be clever el stupido teenager. At any rate this is my interpretation of those trout that were actually swimming but not going any where in the fast water.
This piece will come with a thick stone base that is polished on top and rough cut on the sides.
