Fish Fillet Forest by Richard Arfsten
Fish Fillet Forest is an abstract wall sculpture cast in aluminum. It was designed from scrap pieces of foam that were left over from a carving I did of another foam piece. To do the carving I used a homemade sculpture carving loop mounted into a soldering iron. When I was done carving the floor was filled with this stuff and some had interesting shapes. Frugal me, who saves everything, decided to make something from the scraps. Well I cast my little composition and it was years before I figured out what it was.
One day I was shopping and I looked into the fish display case in the supermarket meat department and saw these shapes. There was a whole forest of fish fillets.
I never claim to be a very sharp tack. I have to feel my tooth brush to see if it is wet to know if I brushed my teeth a minute ago. At any rate it is interesting to me how the names of the pieces come to be. This is a wall hanging piece. It is solid aluminum with a polychrome finish. That is artist talk for paint.
